Vintage Trailers offer unique stay to explore Baja

Discover Baja and the quaint Mexican village of San Felipe from the comfort of a vintage classic trailer situated steps from the coastline and renovated to provide all the comforts of home.

San Felipe, on the Sea of Cortez, is a precious little fishing village relatively untouched by the march of time. A vacation here takes you back to a less harried place without high rises, traffic congestion and shopping malls. And that’s exactly what the many American and Canadian expats who reside here, love about it!

Situated literally across the street from the shore and a short stroll from San Felipe’s historic malecon, Baja Puerto del Mar offers limited vacation rentals in the form of condos and three fully-restored vintage trailers. Each offers sleeping accommodations for two; private, covered patios; heat and air conditioning; Wi-Fi; and TVs with HBO and Showtime. The trailers have fully-working bathrooms plus two trailers have bath tubs. One trailer has an additional bathroom, which was added on and runs nearly the full length of the trailer. The addition is built of corrugated metal, blending meticulously with the classic lines of the trailer itself. Kitchens, however, are to be used as one would an efficiency kitchen – to make a pot of coffee, warm up some tasty leftovers, or keep your beer cold. But hey, when you’re steps from so many exceptional restaurants, why would you want to cook at home?!

The vintage trailers started out as a project of owners Michael and Gail Gates. Michael, not one to sit for long, decided to create a man cave for himself by restoring a classic Airstream travel trailer. He wanted a place to relax, watch TV, and smoke an occasional cigar. Today, three trailers have been lovingly restored and decorated into unique and cozy vintage rentals.

Choose from a ‘73 Silverstreak with original Cuban art and coffee bar or a ‘69 Airstream outfitted originally for a Yucatan Caravan.  The largest trailer is a ‘50 Spartan Aircraft Co, restored to nearly original condition.  Rental rates for these vintage trailers range from $54 to $75 nightly, plus a $30 cleaning fee.  Check for availability and view on VRBO #778670  815172  909675.
